Episode 2: The Boy Who Didn’t See
Weekly Reading: Chapter 2
Today we are going to become flies on the wall (bzzz) and see what an evening in the life of a lazy mill boy looks like. Where does he live? What does he think about (or in this case, NOT think about)?
In chapter 2, we are introduced to Kelly’s home, and we get to see a bigger picture of who Kelly Nash is. Not only is he the boy who “doesn’t think,” but he is also the boy who doesn’t see. Every day he passes by beautiful nature that points to a beautiful, amazing God; a God who is both gentle and powerful; a God who is merciful and mighty; a God who sees. But Kelly just walks on by with a merry whistle, never giving a thought or a word of thanks to His Creator. He has “no eye for the beauties of nature, nor had he the devout heart which loves the works of the Creator because they have come from the hand of the All-loving and the All-wise.”
Last week we talked about the sun, remember? What do we know about the sun? Well, it brings warmth, and light, and life to everything it touches. It makes the tree tops glow and the garden grow! Nothing is hidden from its heat. Hmmm. Do you see? God uses His creation to reveal to us more about His character (who He really is). Like the sun, God is light. In Him is no darkness at all. What else can you learn about God through the things He created?
Take a moment to peer out the window or step outside. What do you see? Smell? Hear? Look at the intricate pattern on the bark of a tree. Observe the color of the fall leaves—vibrant reds, yellows, oranges, and even browns. Or, try to count the sand on the seashore or the stars in the sky—they are countless! Doesn’t it all just fill you with wonder?! The world could have been one big mish-mash of grey and boring, and yet, it’s not. It’s full of color, life, sounds, smells, textures, and shapes! Each stone, bush, and ripple in the water is like a huge arrow pointing to its Creator.
Wow! Kelly sure is missing out on a lot in life. Instead of joining in the amazing song of creation, Kelly sings to the tune of “me, me, me, me, meeee…I, I, I, I, I!” Kelly gives no thought to God or others, and so he is doing nothing with his life.
Now, let’s turn this back on us. What do we think about most of the day? Are you usually thinking about yourself and what you want? Do you ever pause to notice the beauty all around you? Do you ever stop and thank God for all the good things He does for you? Do you ever think about how you can love and serve others?
Just like the sun, the glowing pine trees, and the emerald green grass, we should let our lives point to the good and great God we serve! As you go about the next week, take some time to look around you. Think about who God is and what He has done for you. It might just change your life.
So, what do you think it will take for Kelly to start thinking about the things of God? Do you think he will ever open his eyes and learn to be the boy who sees? Our God does have some pretty creative ways of opening our eyes to the truth (remember Balaam and the talking donkey in the Bible!?). Hmm. What could God use to get Kelly’s attention? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!
