Once upon a time, there lived a man who hated Christmas…”

Hey everyone,

Merry Christmas! I am so excited for this new Christmas series of Character in Crisis where we’ll follow along with the Redfern family in The Unlikely Wise Man and little Tully in Candle in the Window. I can’t think of a better way to spend these frosty evenings than listening along to these timeless stories with the whole family! Before you begin, I invite you to pull up a chair, listen to the following audio clip, and then we’ll talk about some of the best sections of the story below. Ready?

Let’s begin…

Welcome to The Unlikely Wise Man. The curtain unfolds upon two brothers, two families, and two story lines. I always love it when a story takes two people and contrasts their lives, weaving their story lines together in beautiful harmony. In this wintry story we meet two men bearing the name of Redfern, yet their lives couldn’t be more different.

Robert left to pursue fame and success in the big city. Soon thereafter he married and had the joy of a little baby girl in his home. For a season, life was altogether perfect. Yet, without a thought of God or where such blessings came from, when he experienced his first great trial he was crushed. Overwhelmed with grief, he threw himself into his work, forgetting the little heart that beat so close to his own.

Motherless, and abandoned by her father, Margery is left to herself, her young heart starving for love. As time passes, she soon falls in love with a penniless young man. He offers her the love she never knew.

“What do you know of love?” her father yells, “He is unable to give you the life that money can buy!”

"He who loves me most shall have me!” cries Margery, for she longs for things that money can not buy. In her sorrow and desperation, she elopes with the young man, leaving her father emptier and colder than before.

Fast forward into time and way on the other side of town lives a simple family; Thomas and Rebecca Redfern. A man of faith, Thomas pursued his career of being a doctor in selfless dedication. His joy in life is to serve as His God does—richly and from the depth of his heart. His home is filled with a good wife, smiling children, and countless other blessings. They do not have many comforts or luxuries, but theirs was a happy one. As our story will soon show, they understood and lived out the beautiful truth of Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

As we continue to follow along with the Redfern family, I invite you to be swept up in the cheerful singing of the Redfern children, the humor of the faithful butler James, the giving spirit of Thomas Redfern, and the redemption of Robert Redfern.

Till next time!

So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus that He said, “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35.
